In a bold move, a Polish Radio station has replaced its broadcast team with artificial intelligence, marking a new chapter in radio history. OFF Radio’s program director described this shift as a “social experiment” to observe the effects of AI on society. Based in Krakow, the station announced it would be the first in Poland to fully feature AI hosts, stirring curiosity and debate nationwide.
TARGETING YOUNG LISTENERS
The station shared that these AI hosts aim to attract a young audience by focusing on cultural, artistic, and social topics. The new lineup features a trio of Gen Z-inspired AI personalities, “Emi, Kuba, and Alex,” each with distinct personalities and backgrounds crafted by journalists to appeal to modern listeners. Within days, this novel concept has already made waves across Poland.
According to the station, the bios and unique traits of each AI host were created by human journalists, emphasizing an authentic, relatable experience for listeners. This innovative approach raises new questions about how AI can shape media interactions and listener engagement.
A CHALLENGE OR AN OPPORTUNITY?
OFF Radio’s director, Marcin Pulit, explained that the move was a response to a central question: “Is AI a chance for media, radio, and journalism—or a threat?” Pulit stressed that no journalists were laid off, adding that this transition came as a response to extremely low listener numbers, hoping to spark renewed interest.
However, the decision has not been without criticism. Mateusz Demski, a former radio host and film critic, reported widespread pushback, including over 15,000 signatures from people concerned about becoming “test subjects.” Demski added that numerous young listeners expressed discomfort with the experimental approach.
