A former Soviet intelligence officer has claimed that Donald Trump was recruited by the KGB in 1987 and given the code name “Krasnov.”
This striking allegation was made in a Facebook post by former Kazakhstan intelligence chief Alnur Musayev. According to a report by the Mirror, 71-year-old Musayev previously served as the head of Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee and worked in the 6th Directorate of the KGB in Moscow. This unit was responsible for counterintelligence operations in the economic sector.
According to Musayev, one of the directorate’s primary objectives was to “recruit businessmen from capitalist countries.” He alleges that in 1987, one such individual was Donald Trump, then a 40-year-old real estate developer from New York. “In 1987, our directorate recruited Donald Trump under the code name ‘Krasnov’,” he wrote.
Musayev’s post contained no evidence to support his claims. However, in a subsequent comment, he made an even more sensational assertion: “Today, the personal file of the individual with the code name ‘Krasnov’ has been removed from the FSB archives. It is now being privately managed by someone close to Putin,” he said.

These allegations add a new dimension to the longstanding speculation surrounding Trump’s ties to Russia. His connections reportedly date back to his first visit to Moscow in 1987.
At the time, Trump was a rising star in New York’s real estate market and traveled to the Soviet Union to explore the possibility of building a hotel in the capital. While Soviet officials allegedly facilitated this visit, intelligence analysts questioned whether it was merely a business trip or part of a more covert agenda.
A report published several years ago revealed that the KGB had updated a secret personality assessment questionnaire issued to its agents in 1985. According to intelligence sources, this document instructed agents to identify “key figures” in the West and recruit them as “agents, covert collaborators, or unofficial special contacts.”

Putin Was Once a KGB Officer
Musayev’s claim suggests that Trump may have been one of the KGB’s targets. Despite years of scrutiny, Trump has consistently denied any improper ties to Russia or collusion with President Vladimir Putin.
Nonetheless, some U.S. officials have repeatedly voiced concerns about Trump’s close relationship with the Kremlin leader, particularly during his presidency. Anthony Scaramucci, who briefly served as White House Communications Director in 2017, recently made notable remarks on the podcast The Rest Is Politics: US regarding this issue.
Scaramucci said that Trump’s admiration for Putin puzzled former high-ranking officials. “I think the president is under some kind of mysterious ‘influence’,” he stated. While he did not elaborate on what that influence might be, he suggested that figures such as H.R. McMaster, James Mattis, and John Kelly—who all served in the Trump administration—struggled to understand Trump’s affinity for Putin. “I don’t know why,” he added. “McMaster didn’t get it, Mattis didn’t get it, Kelly didn’t get it.”
